Thanksgiving leftovers don’t get much love after the third day around here, but this year, I found a new purpose for the lingering cranberry sauce in my fridge: this festive, spiced mocktail. It’s been 2 years and 2 months since I’ve had a sip of alcohol, and I’ve found so much joy in crafting drinks that feel special and celebratory. Most of the time, I’m perfectly happy sipping plain water (yes, just plain water—I’m one of the rare few who isn’t a huge fan of sparkling water). But when the holidays roll around or there’s something special to celebrate, I love having a festive drink in hand to join in the spirit of the moment. There’s something about a thoughtfully crafted beverage that makes the occasion feel even more memorable.
Speaking of joy, I finally saw Wicked! I had tears of joy fill my eyes at the start of overture, and sat and watched the entire thing with wonder. I had to bite my tongue so I wouldn’t sing the whole way through. And the poignant dance scene at the Ozdust made me weep. The cinematography, the live singing, costumes, set design, musical talents of Cynthia Erivo, and everything in between, made it even better than I’d hoped it would be. I plan to see it again (by myself) in the theaters at least once more, and have listened to the soundtrack with the kids nonstop. Dare I say, I think I like the new soundtrack even more than I originally loved the Broadway recording.
While I’m firmly team green for Elphaba (forever aligned with the overlooked), I couldn’t help but smile when this mocktail turned out a vibrant, cheerful Galinda-pink today. It’s a perfect mix of holiday cheer, a little magic, and a creative twist on tradition.
Cheers to finding a bit of sparkle in the everyday!
xx
Danielle
